Belief can generally be categorized as positive or negative.

Positive belief contends that something is true. Negative belief contends it is false.

Every belief is both positive and negative.

To believe Bob committed the crime is to disbelieve another committed the crime.
To believe another committed the crime is to disbelieve Bob committed the crime.

To believe God exists is to disbelieve God does not exist.
To believe God does not exist is to disbelieve God exists.

There are four scenarios in which belief and non-belief can be expressed.

A positive belief says, "I affirm it is true" and is symbolized as + +.

A positive belief simultaneously says, "I deny it is not true" and is symbolized as - -.

A negative belief says, "I deny it is true" and is symbolized as - +.

A negative belief simultaneously says, "I affirm it is not true" and is symbolized as + -.
